60 Minutes…
Is anyone else watching this ludacris program? Talking shit about the Millenials (those born 1980 to 1995). They must know that none of us (except me) are watching this? I’m so pissed!!
So here’s the video clip of the Millennials (may have to visit my Tumblr to watch). As someone who works with them in the college arena, I can tell you a lot of this employer stuff is crap. Sure, lots of millennials will bolt if you don’t give them exactly what they want, but those are terrible employees who don’t deserve to work at your company anyway. They got that way by being coddled (by parents, teachers, coaches, etc), and if you continue to coddle them, they’ll continue to be high maintenance employees. What rings 100% true is the parent involvement. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had a parent call and say, “Suzy’s roommate was mean to her. I want you to give her a new room.” Um … Suzy is a grownup, and if Suzy wants a new room she can come talk to me herself. She can also learn to mediate her own conflicts without the help of her mother. Yeahthanks. I know someone whose mother went with him on the first day of his first teaching job to help him fill out all the paperwork, choose a retirement plan, and ask HR questions FOR HIM. Yeah, seriously.
In short, I don’t think all millenials are thin-skinned, narcissistic whiners. I do think many of them have suffered from “I’m special” syndrome hardcore. It’s fine to expect to conquer the world, as long as you expect the blood, sweat, and tears that comes along with that goal.
